09:00 Kochi Station 
Meet your guide or start your self-guided tour at Kochi Station. The station serves JR Dosan Line, airport buses, the local tram service - the Tosaden Kotsu. The Tosaden tram takes you further downtowm, and the day pass for adults is just 500 yen. 

09:05 Kochi Prefecuture “i “ Information Center Tosa Terrace
Kochi Prefecture "i" Information Center Tosa Terrace is next to the station. You may pick up various multilingual brochures of the area, get a WiFi router free of charge, purchase a one-day "My-Yu Bus" pass, arrange a taxi, rental car or a bicycle with the help of the friendly staff. 

09:15 Cocochi Coffee COCHI COCOCHI Coffee
Make a pit stop and enjoy a delicious cup of coffee ¥350 for a good organic black coffee at one of the best coffee shops in town, Cocochi Coffee (“COCOCHIコーヒー”). Opt for one of their specials - the with the image of Ryoma Sakamoto, one of most prominent historic figures of Japan, who hailed from Kochi.

09:40 Tosaden Tram
The operator of Tosaden, the oldest tram system in operation in Japan, owns a unique and colorful collections of antique trams worth checking out. If you are on a self-guided tour, you will be needing a local Japanese-speaker to call the garage to make a reservation for you and possibly to accompany you if no English-speaker is on duty.

09:50 Harimaya Bridge (“Harimayabashi”)
This small, charming bridge is famous for a tragic love story, well known among the Japanese, between a Buddhist priest and a young lady in the township. The vibrant red of the bridge makes a perfect backdrop for a photo opportunity. 

09:55 Obiyamachi Shopping Arcade
This vibrant shopping arcade is a home to numerous local shops offering regional souvenirs as well as snack foods. 
Alternate Route The Tosa Sunday Market (Optional on Sundays)
If you are in Kochi on a Sunday do not miss out on visting the Tosa Sunday market, parallel to Obiyamachi Shopping Arcade. This is arguably one of the best and the oldest outdoor farmers markets in Japan, operating since the 17th century and offering an array of delicious local produce.

10:30 Kochi Castle
Kochi Castle is the city's most interesting and best known attraction, originally built at the beginning of the 17th century, burned in the 1700's and painstakingly rebuilt to what it is today. Lear about the history of the region, explore the castle grounds and marvel the picturesque views of the city from the top of the castle. 

11:30 Hirome Market
With 60 food stalls in one food hall serving a vast variety of Japanese cuisine as well as Indian curry, and western dishes such as pizza and burgers, Hirome Market is the perfect place for lunch. Take in the noisy, lively atmosphere, and enjoy your meal and drinks among the locals.

Transportation options include: 

  • Walking: Kochi City is flat and pedestrian friendly. Smartphone navigation and/or a WiFi portable router help in getting around
  • Cycling: Bicycles can be rented at the Kochi Prefecture "i" Information Center Tosa Terrace in front of Kochi Station. You need to provide the following information when renting: your name, address (accommodation in Japan), and telephone number. Bicycles need to be returned in the evening before closing time. 
  • Taxis:  Taxis are widely available, however few drivers speak English. Many drivers have taken courtesy courses and do serve non-Japanese customers.
  • Tram:  Both city trams and buses are operated by Tosaden, and they both offer 1-day passes for tourists. The tram pass is sufficient for visiting inner city areas, whereas the bus pass should be used for outer areas. Both passes are hop-on/hop-off and they are valid for the whole day. You can buy the tram pass from the Kochi "i" Information Center Tosa Terrace or from any tram when first boarding. The pass costs 500 yen for adults.
  • Bus: The one-day bus pass for tourists is called a "My-Yu Bus" pass, and is required for outer areas of Kochi city. "The My-Yu Bus" pass costs 1,000 yen for adults (for overseas travelers it is half-price at 500 yen if passport is shown), and it can be purchased at the Kochi Prefecture "i" Information Center Tosa Terrace. This pass covers all the same tram stations as the tram pass (for the flat rate zone).
