Odawara’s Modern Art and Tradition

The combination of medieval activities and Japanese art creates a one-of-kind experience

7 hours

  • Feel the atmosphere of the Edo era through a visit to Odawara’s castle, you may experience the Edo era
  • Stroll in and admire Edo-style buildings in Minaka shopping street
  • Learn Japanese culture and modern art by visiting Enoura Observatory - Odawara Art Foundation

The aim of this tour is to step back in time to the Edo period. Your journey starts with a visit to magnificent Odawara Castle: It is more than just a place to admire, it also provides opportunities for visitors to take part in some fun activities: renting samurai, princesses, and ninja costumes, are fantastic examples of what it has to offer! You can also stroll in a fun Minaka shopping street with multiple local souvenir shops, which is the best place to pass the time. The "Tower building" located next to the Minama shopping street has an observation deck and a free foot bath on the 14th floor, offering a view of the Odawara town.

Another goal of this journey is to learn about Japanese modern art while visiting the Enoura Observatory. This open-air museum encompasses a variety of topics, including modern art and nature, thanks to its unusual building and location on a rocky cliff face high above the sea.

Tour Itinerary:

We will begin our two-hour visit to Odawara Castle at 10:00 am. From its top floor observatory, it offers views of Sagami Bay and Odawara city! [Note: It is closed on the second Wednesday of December, as well as from December 29 to January 3]

We will be passing by Minaka outdoor shopping street at 12:00 pm, where we are going to eat lunch thereafter. It has Edo-period stores and cafés, as well as a view of the castle. On the 14th level of the "Tower building," there is an observation deck and a free foot bath with a view over Odawara town.

After lunch, we are going to head to the Odawara Art Foundation’s Enoura Observatory for the last activity, which begins at 1:30 pm. To get to this location, we will need to take a free shuttle from Nebukawa station (8 minutes from Odawara station on the Tōkaidō Line) at 1:15 pm.

This site is a one-of-a-kind open-air art museum that combines art, architecture, zen attitude, and breathtaking natural beauty!

After that, take the same free shuttle at 4:35 pm back to the station. We will then head back to Odawara station, where we will wrap up the tour at 5:00 pm.
