  • Visit local’s traditional Japanese house built 70 years ago
  • Learn how to make matcha and try sake

Description

Choshi, which is 2 hours from Tokyo Station by express train, is located on a peninsula stretching into the Pacific Ocean in the far northeast corner of Chiba Prefecture. The small town is famous for great seafood, soy sauce factories and its dramatic coastline. There you will cook authentic Japanese dishes with Mayuko and her mom in the traditional house of her grandparents. Since Choshi has the biggest harvest of fish in all Japan, we will use local fish.

We are chosen as one of the #1 Japanese cooking classes in all of Japan in 2020. Besides our classes in Tokyo, we occasionally offer classes in the countryside. Our class (only 6 seats) suits well people who would like to enjoy local Japanese culture and a homestyle Japanese meal cooked in a traditional Japanese house. This will be an entirely different experience from a “studio-type” cooking class. We are sure you will enjoy the personal attention and the quiet countryside atmosphere which is different from Tokyo.

Details

We will meet at Choshi Station (2 hours from Tokyo) and we will take you to our house by foot. Then we will have green tea together in tatami room and you will learn how to make matcha together with “ochagashi” (Japanese confectionary). Then you will wear rental apron and cook in our kitchen. After that we will enjoy the meal together with sake (non-alcohol available). Our guests leave our little kitchen with a big smile and full tummy.

Tips for a ride from Tokyo

If you take the JR Shiosai Express line bound for Choshi, leaving at 7:37 am from Tokyo station, it will be perfect since you will arrive several minutes before the meeting time.

If you have a Japan Rail Pass, you won’t need to purchase any tickets. You do not need to book your ticket in advance. Half of the cars are non-reserved, and usually have plenty of seats. You will need two tickets to ride the Shiosai Express.
